Every year during the fasting month of Ramadan, Muslims don’t eat or drink (among other things) from dawn to dusk. It is a time when special thought in relation to food is given to the selection of fare for the breaking of fast, dishes that are familiar will be supplemented by those not so commonly consumed. Enter the ‘Pasar Ramadan’, an expansion of the normal pasar malam or night market familiar to all Malaysians, which is held year round. The pasar offerings during Ramadan are focused solely on food and drinks from one end to the other, and are open from about 4pm to just before the break of fast, around 7.30 p.m, though there are some mixed bazaars as well which have separate areas for food, clothing, decorative items and fireworks, which are very popular.. We took ourselves off to one of the best at the Malawati Stadium, Shah Alam and came home laden with all sorts of goodies, way too much of course, but it will do for the early morning meal the next day if you are a Muslim, lunch if you’re not.
While the yearly bazaars attract families from all the Malaysian communities, it is especially enjoyable to share your purchases with a Muslim family during the breaking of fast. A few days before Raya, there will be extra excitement in the air. Just remember, keep an eye on the oil lamps!
